    I'm working backwards through your videos Kayleen and discovered this one! Thanks for this advice it is very sound and comes at a time when I realise I need to do more 'quality' practice, rather than producing work simply to post on Instagram. For 3 years that has been very beneficial in pushing me to practice and gives me great motivation, but I'm starting to think it is also stifling some of my progression and improvement in the different forms of creativity that I love. This video has shown me I am right feeling this way, so I'm off to work out what I love the most (out of the many mediums I am trying) at the moment and do some 'quality' practice, for better or worse! Thank you once again!

      This video has been popular for a very good reason Robyn. We all have been swooned by social media to the point we can loose our “whys”. I remind myself all the time of my mortality and time limited and it helps prioritise what is worthy of my ONE life. Enjoy!

    Thanks for sharing your difficult week Kayleen. I can imagine how this 'interruption' and the distraction that it has created for you, will have stalled your creative energy. It sounds like after the initial shock and irritation, you have resolved some of the issues, and I hope you will be in your creative space very soon. Your tips about organising your studio were very helpful. My art space is a small room, that is best described as a room initially designed to be a small lounge room, or dining room. It has been my little lounge room, but when I took up art 6 years ago, it has quickly transformed into my art space! I do get overwhelmed by all my tools and bits and pieces and lack of good storage doesn't help. I recently had a re-vamp of the area and it works much better, but I will take some of your tips to do some more 'sorting' I think! I do waste a lot of time trying to find things! Just to resonate with the interruptions - watching this video has taken twice as long because of needing to put it on pause constantly. My husband thinks I'm just watching telly I'm sure and starts conversations continually!

    • @kayleenwest
      @kayleenwest 27 днів тому

      That is a difficult situation Robyn so sorting into zones and categories will help tremendously. I have been reworking the studio for 3 days but resorting myself. That does make me feel so much more at peace and worth the hours. Love to hear how you go.

    Hi Kayleen. I'm watching this video on my TV and just wanted to let you know how much I'm enjoying it! I love that you showed how you improvised when you forgot your easel, and I could feel how frustrated it must have been to lose that time in painting. Every time I go to my art group, or outside sketching there is at least one thing I forget! Even though my art bag is packed most of the time. I haven't tried pastel as yet, as I'm busy trying so many other mediums, and pastel looks a little too messy perhaps! However, I love what you do with it and the layers of colour and shapes you can achieve with it. Thanks for the inspiration! This colder weather has kept me inside, but I need to be braver I think. I'm always in a good place painting in nature! Best wishes Robyn

      Thank you for such thoughtful feedback Robyn. I find the pastel not too messy if you take wet wipes or wear gloves. I collect the dust into a jar. I must admit I don’t like painting out when too cold and am inclined to opt for the studio during winter months. Thanks for watching!

    Wow, did this video come at the right time. I share my work on Facebook. I've been doing a painting every day. Inevitability, I get friends who rave or are amazed. From this, I've started to get commissions. The stress level goes up, for sure. Suddenly, it's not about the fun and joy. it's about the skill and happiness of the customer. Yesterday, I posted something, and one comment was, "That's not good." She could have said she didn't like it. But it crushed me. I realized I was only painting for likes... oops. From now on - after watching this... I'm going to paint for MY joy. Thank you.

      Hi Michele, I’m not sure where you are located. The brand here isn’t available anymore but it is a chalk based paint almost identical to the Artisan Chalk Finish I use and supply in Australia now. Chalk paints are available in many countries. These are the furniture supplies I have: playfessional.com.au/collections/artisan-paint-company-paint-supplies

    Does it work best on distressed finished ... or can it use it to highlight the ornate work on a dresser I am about to complete (painted in one flat color) ?

      You can use it wherever you would like a touch of metalic or the look of gilding. There are no rules. Whatever look you enjoy 😊

    When u say “filler” though, what did u use? That’s the hard part

      Gosh, this was years ago so I don't remember. It was possibly the Selley's Hard Filler. I needed something that dried quickly for this and I didn't need to use an electric sander to smooth back as it was repaired in the customer's lounge area, after they damaged it.

    I do stain art, but I stain around the piece I’ve drawn. Do you stain the rest of the piece? I got the Coptic pens today as I’m about to work on a commissioned cedar chest, but not sure how this will work with regular stain. I’ve tried to find your finished piece, but haven’t found it yet. I just love this.

      I was interrupted with this project Connie so there isn't a finished piece as yet. I wasn't going to stain over it. If i did, water-based stain may be best as a solvent-based stain may lift the ink. I bought a chopping board to test the sealer over the ink too but haven't tested. Again I think water-based top coat or oil and wax are likely safest options. I hope that helped. I have a free group on Facebook is that helps too. You can always ask questions in there. facebook.com/groups/146578180972647

    What a great tip! I’m into refurbishing old thrift store jewelry boxes. Relining them is not one of my favorite things to do. This will save so much time and it appears in your video to give a professional look. Thank you!
